How to Adapt Your Home for a Safer, More Independent Life
Your home should be the place where you feel most free. But when you live with a mobility disability, it often becomes the opposite — a space full of obstacles, discomfort, or even hazards.
The good news is: you don’t need a full renovation to make your home more accessible.
With a few strategic changes, your space can become much more functional, safe, and comfortable.
Here are some real-life recommendations that have worked for many of our clients at Agito.
Start with your entrances
Can you enter and exit your home easily?
- Sometimes, just adding a portable ramp at the front door can solve the most important barrier.
- Check if your doors are wide enough for your chair (ideally 32 inches or more).
- If you have steps, consider a level change or a modular ramp that fits your layout.
Make your bathroom functional (and safe)
The bathroom is one of the most important spaces to adapt.
Here are some basics that truly help:
- Grab bars near the toilet and shower
- Walk-in showers with no threshold, or adapted bath benches
- Enough space to turn around with your chair
- And something as simple as placing toiletries within reach can change everything
The kitchen can work for you too
- Lower the items you use every day — no need to stretch for upper shelves.
- If possible, adjust the height of the prep area or sink.
- Look for adapted tools (jar openers, ergonomic handles, etc.)
You don’t need to do everything at once.
The goal is to make life easier — not more complicated — one change at a time.
Other key areas to consider
- Clear hallways — remove rugs or anything that might catch your wheels
- Tables with open space underneath, so you can roll up close
- Wheelchairs with slim or off-road wheels if your space is tight or uneven
- Basic smart home tools: controlling lights or doors from your phone can make a big difference
Make it yours — your way
The most important thing: don’t copy solutions that weren’t made for you.
What works for someone else may not suit your space or your movement.
Your home should respond to your routine and your real needs.
And if you don’t know where to begin — no worries.
We’re here to guide you.
